The primary function of painting is to protect metals, wood and other materials against corrosion and rot. Additional functions of painting are identification, camouflage, visibility and chemical agent resistance.
Camouflage of military material is a function of paint. All military vehicles and equipment have characteristic shapes and interior shadows. These so-called “signatures” contrast with natural surroundings and make objects conspicuous.
Aervoe camouflage paints are formulated to offer both the unique visual qualities of a true camouflaging cover and the superior quality of an anti-corrosion paint medium. Colors offered coincide with those that are standard US military designated field colorings and can be used as such.
Aervoe formulas utilize better pigments, solids and resins than other brands. These paints are formulated to match Federal Spec. 595A color standards. These paints dry to a tough, permanent, hard coat that can withstand harsh environments and abrasion. If blended in US military color patterns this paint offers true camouflage effects that trick the eye.
World War II era vehicles were painted with absolutely flat paint formulas. These paints have finely pulverized media in the mixture designed to reduce or completely prevent light reflectivity. Part numbers for Olive Drab 987A and 987B listed below meet the original US Army specifications for these coatings.
These flat paints are very porous. Water spots, oil and fuel drips, greasy hand and finger prints as well as any area that is regularly rubbed and brushed against will contrast with the overall paint job. Some restorers may object to this but the world is not a perfect place and every vehicle will eventually assume its own characteristic look.
After WW II semi gloss paints became standard on all military vehicles. The true multi colored camouflage patterns utilizing flat paint formulas appeared during the Vietnam War and continue today. These modern camouflage patterns vary depending on the environment, geographical location, seasons and climate where the vehicles are to be operated.
These paints are not to be restricted to military vehicles; our beautifully restored 1947 CJ-2A is painted in 977 Sand and draws attention and comments everywhere it goes. This lusterless color is the perfect choice for the open sandy deserts here in southwestern Arizona.
